1856 cover to Hampshire endorsed "By the Royal Charter May 22" with Campbell & Fergusson 3d SG 31c pair (large vertical margins) cancelled with BN '5' of 'BALLARAT' (crowned-oval b/s), superb 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/ AU12/*56D/=PACKET=' cds transit plus '1d' h/s & London cds all in red on the face, Portsmouth arrival b/s, minor blemishes.
1856 (Dec 24; Christmas Eve) mercantile outer with Woodblocks Imperf 6d pair with full margins to London "p Lightning" & 1857 (Jan 14) cover to Wiltshire - a very scarce destination - "pr Royal Charter" with a full-margined single, both with 'AUSTRALIAN/PAID/LIVERPOOL/=PACKET=' transit cds in red on the face. Ex 'Besancon' (III). (2)
1858 cover to Bedfordshire with rare & superb franking of Woodblocks 6d orange Rouletted 7-9 at the GPO SG 53b horizontal pair (rouletted vertically, the L/H stamp being enormous) tied by neat BN '1' of Melbourne (b/s), 'AMPTHILL' arrival b/s in blue, docketing on the address panel has been removed. RPSofL (1942) and RPSofV (2018) Certificates. [NB: the stamps have been lifted & hinged in place]
1858 folded entire to Boston, USA accounting for sales of shovels and reporting "... there has been no improvement in our markets ...", endorsed per "Emeu" with 2d Emblems rouletted & 1/- Octagonal imperf (cut-into) tied Barred Oval '1/V' and Melbourne 'NO15/58' b/s, rated "8" & "16" with 'PAID/JAN11/59/LONDON' d/s in red and New York ' 5/JAN / 29 / N YORK BR PKT' cds on face. Not listed in Ben Palmer's Census.
1860 (Sep 27) Macartney cover with rare Three Issue franking of Emblems 1d x2, Beaded Ovals 4d & Queen-on-Throne 6d cancelled with very fine BN '1' of Melbourne (tiny b/s), to Queensland with largely very fine 'BRISBANE/=QUEENSLAND=' transit b/s & 'ROCKHAMPTON/OC14/1860/=NSW=' arrival cds unusually on the face, flap removed & minor blemishes. A cracker Queensland Provisional Period inwards cover.
1860 to New Hampshire, USA endorsed "via Southampton" with 2d Emblems rouletted & 1/- Octagonal tied Barred Numeral '1' and Melbourne 'AP7/60' b/s, rated "8" & "16" with 'LONDON/HG/MY8/60/PAID' in red, New York ' 5 / MAY / 19 / N YORK BR PKT' cds and 'FRANCISTOWN/MAY/23/NH' arrival d/s all on face, minor edge faults. Not listed in Ben Palmer's Census.
1900 inwards from India with QV 1a brown tied 'BOMBAY/10JL00' cds with Melbourne 'T3D', 'NOT KNOWN/BY LETTER CARRIER' and 'UNCLAIMED' cachets, orignally addressed to "Chief Engineer SS 'Imbolla' [?]" at Calcutta & forwarded, the back festooned with transits including Dead Letter Office d/s of Melbourne, Madras & Bombay, a few minor blemishes.
1901 (May) stampless Jolley PPC endorsed "Feld-Post" to Germany with message in German headed "12 V 01", 'KAIS DEUTSCHE/MARINE-SCHIFFSPOST/No 46/21.5.01' datestamp used aboard SMS Hansa & superb 'OBERLAGIEWNIK' arrival cds. [Naval ships from various countries came to Melbourne for the official Opening of Parliament on 9th May 1901. Hansa departed Chinese waters 31.3.1901, returning 19.6.1901. The message states the trip China-Melbourne took four weeks]
1908 usage of 2d violet Stamped To Order Envelope with 'The Britannia Tie Propy Ltd/85 Flinders Lane/Melbourne' imprint at U/L, to France with 3d orange tied 'LATE FEE/20MY08/MELBOURNE VIC' to pay 2½d letter rate plus 2½d late fee, Lyon arrival b/s, light central fold & minor blemishes. Very unusual usage of STO envelope.
1910 double-rate cover to England with Combination Franking of 6d green plus South Australia 1d red tied 'REGISTERED/2/23NO10/MELBOURNE' cds, black 'GPO Melbourne' R label tied alongside on face, 'REGISTERED/25DE10/MANCHESTER' arrival b/s [Christmas Day], fine condition. The interchangeable use of States' stamps was permitted from 13.10.1910 only; an early & attractive mixed franking.
DATESTAMPS: 'GERANG GERANG RY STN/OC31/88/VIC' unframed CDS (spelling error; ERD) on 1d Postal Card with Barred Numeral 'MD/76' alongside, endorsed "Gerang Gerung" on back. PO 1.8.1887; renamed Gerang Gerung 16.5.1921. [43km NW of Horsham. The earlier of only two recorded strikes]
DATESTAMPS: 'LYAL/8AU13/VIC' on 1d Coronation Postal Card (Prince of Wales) to "No 2 Settlement/Shepparton PO". PO 19.2.1872; RO 25.5.1919; closed 1.1.1920. [The Waranga Dam was completed in 1909 & the State Rivers & Water Supply Commission was charged with making irrigated land available for orchards. No 1 Settlement was at Shepparton East. No 2 was at Orrvale where an RO opened 1.10.1915; PO 7.8.1918; closed 1.1.1920 - no postmark recorded] The illustration is above Lot 599.
Stamp Statute selection comprising 6d, 1/- x4, 2/- x14 (including a pair on postal piece & four apparently unused), 2/6d x6, 5/- x8, 10/- x4, £1 x18 including pairs & a strip of 3, and £5 x2 (one mss cancelled; the other with central punch), condition variable.

1884-96 Large Stamp Duty array sorted into packets with large numbers of most values including 15/- mauve (33, most with faults), 15/- brown x100+, £1/5/- x50 approx, £1/10/- x40 approx, £2 x200+, 45/- x200+, £5 x20 approx & £10 x40 approx, a few multiples noted, condition variable but generally fine. A remarkable holding & excellent research opportunity.

Commonwealth Period post-1901 Perf 11 Stamp Duty Ultra-High Denominations £25 dull blue-green apparently lifted from a document but with large-part o.g. & no trace of a cancellation. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018) states "Genuine in all respects...shows no trace of any cancellation...great rarity in mint condition". [NB: the pre-1901 Recess £25 unused is catalogued at £60,000]
Commonwealth Period post-1901 Perf 11 Undenominated 'PENALTY/PAID' in mauve marginal example, full unmounted o.g. Superb! [This & the next lot are the only examples we have seen]
