image 1715 REBELLION - EYE-WITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE CAPTURE OF INNVERNESS: 13 Nov. 1715 EL (minor wear and slight dusting) privately carried from "Invernes" to "The Laird of Achnagairn" with fascinating description of the recent campaign against the "Rebell Garrison" signed by "John Hossack" with a brief postscript signed by "Dun. Forbes". Hossack outlines recent developments in and around Invernness "...upon our march Tuesday morning above the Loch, Lovat advised us of Keppoch's retreat to the other side of the Loch & that he was on his march towards us to prevent his falling into this town to support the Rebell Garrison...Mr Arthur Ross... from a great deal of Zeall and courage... ran fast to his fate... and attacked the Tollbooth, having in his way been encouraged by seizing the Captain of the Guard, wherein the entry he received the fatal ball that in 4 hours after gave a fatal period to his Life...Yesterday the Rebell Governor thought fit to desert the Town and our friends have taken possesion of it...". He then gives details of troop numbers and movements. Forbes' PS asks the addressee to "Advise me per next how the D[...] came to be enclosed in your letter." image LOCHCARRON - THE VERY RARE CIRCULAR NAMESTAMP ON COVERS TO INVERNESS/LONDON: 7 Apr 1784 EL (part 1 side-flap removed) from "Scothouse" to Inverness charged "2[d]" with very fine strike of the very rare "LOCHCARRON" small circular mark well placed on the flap. This is the earliest of only three examples of this mark (Auckland RO144) recorded. Plus c.8 Jan 1808 EL (minor dusting) possibly from the Hebrides (Broadford?) charged 2/8 to London with a mainly fine strike of the same rare circular "LOCHARRON" (the latest recorded) just across the join on the reverse.
