1817 (June 17 - July 1st) Twelve page letter written by Lord Amherst (signed "A") to his wife, written en route to England following his unsuccessful diplomatic mission to the Emperor of China. Begun on the "Caesar" at sea en route to St. Helena, the final four pages written on the island. From St. Helena he writes "We are lodged with Sir Hudson and Lady Lowe .... he has spoken to me most confidentially respecting his important charge. I am in expectation of a visit from Count Bertrand and am told it is probable he will be the bearer of a message from Bonaparte appointing a time for my seeing him. He is suffering with a swelled face which I am informed is the only reason why he has not yet fixed an interview. I have rode all about Longwood, his residence and seen the bounds presented to him, it being Sir Hudson wish, since the debate upon that subject in the House of Lords, that I should be made acquainted with his exact situation. We are grossly deceived in England by the publication of Montholons letter, and by the exaggerated, I might say unfounded, reports of the treatment experienced by our prisoner". An interesting historical letter, not posted.

image 1817 (Oct. 10) Entire letter from George Dunlop, Surgeon with the 66th Foot, to his brother in Scotland, reporting the arrival of the first Battalion and the return of the second Battalion to England to be disbanded, Dunlop having been ordered to remain to do duty with the first Battn. until further orders. The letter includes "I have been introduced to Napoleon who addressed several questions to me. He is now become much more social than formerly and frequently rides out. It is the opinion of many here that he will be allowed to go to England in eight or ten years. He appears to be in bad health on account his being troubled with swelled legs, his limits are enlarged that he may have more exercise ..... Mardens account of Bonaparte is said to be very incorrect by those who came out with him and they give him credit for only about one half of what he states. Bony has seen it himself and is very much displeased at it". A good letter, privately carried to England and posted at Plymouth Dock, charged 1/3. Photo on Page 218. (Image1)
