image 1868-79 Perf 11½-12½ 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow SG 78a with the Watermark Reversed, GPO cds of NO11/68, Cat £2000. Absent from 'Besancon'. Harry Lower's, Michael Blake's and Don Pearce's examples sold for $2990 $2445 & $2242 respectively.A rare stamp that is seriously underrated, in part because it is listed by Gibbons under the Large Star Watermark issue., where it is "lost". No unused examples have been recorded. Often characterised as an 'error', in the catalogue for the John Griffiths' sale, it was noted that this was a trial printing on the paper to be used for the new De La Rue 2d SG 152, issued in August 1868. We consider that it was either that or an emergency printing perhaps inadvertently on the new paper, and expect that all examples have the watermark reversed. Gary Diffen has recorded about 40 examples, some of which are defective or 'dwarf' stamps.
