1837 No Stars Large Date VG perfect grey original. Dimes were the first coins of the Seated Design to be released in 1837. Based on the British depiction of Britannia, the design was considered superior to the earlier Capped Bust coins, and judging by newspaper articles of the day, was well-received by the American public. 1837 No Stars Small Date attractive original grey VG. A nice coin for the grade. Author Brian Greer, who wrote the book "The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Dimes" in 1992, has opined that the Small Date version of the No Stars variety is a bit scarcer than the Large Date. This is consistent with the present cataloger's experience. (Image)

1853 No Arrows F. Even original grey. 95,000 Seated Dimes were produced at the old weight standard of 2.67 grams in the first couple of months of 1853 before the rising price of silver forced a nearly 7% reduction in weight (to 2.49 grams.) The weight reduction was denoted by adding arrows to the date. Over 12 million of the new lighter-weight coins were struck for circulation, being desperately needed to replace the heavier coins that were being hoarded for their metallic value. Thus, the No Arrows version of 1853 represents less than 1% of the mintage for that year. (Image)

1856 Large Date VF nice original. Greer states that of the 5,780,000 dimes minted in Philadelphia in 1856, only 150,000 are of the Large Date variety. However, it's actual frequency of appearance has led more recent researchers to estimate it's mintage at about 400,000. Still a scarce coin, particularly compared to its Small Date counterpart.
