Samoa 1847: scarce early missionary entire from Pago Pago, Tutuila to London endorsed "per Trafalgar" (ship) with red PAID SHIP LETTER / JA 22 / 1848 / SYDNEY, transit cancel, black "8", & red "3" (in m/s) overcancelled black m/s "3" (further 3d to pay). Message (headed "Pagopago, Tutuila, Octo. 12th 1847") from H V Murray to Sir Culling Eardly Smith (treasurer of the London Missionary Society): "Dear Sir, I beg to advise you that I have this day drawn a Bill upon you for Sixty Pounds Sterling, in favour of Messrs Awner & McLellan, Merchants, Glasgow on account of Salary. Requesting that you will be pleased to honour the same". Additional recipient's m/s endorsements include "Received June 2, 1848"; "WC July 20, 1848"; "BB / 143". Ex Wolffers, March 1876 (pencilled m/s). Very fine condition.
