LONDON - RARE "SHIP/LETTER" C.D.S. ON COVER EX HOLLAND SIMPLY ADDRESSED TO "HERR N.M. ROTHSCHILD" [NO PLACE!]; 29 Jan. 1810 EL from "Adam." [Amsterdam; pencil note as usual for this correspondence] addressed simply to "Herr N.M. Rothschild" without any town or street address (perhaps to disguise the destination if taken by the enemy in transit?), having mainly very fine strikes of the rare Unframed London "SHIP/14MA14/1811/LETTER" cds (Rob.S16; "few examples of this rare handstamp recorded") nicely placed on the front. Charged "2/9" which was the triple rate (6d Ship Letter + 5d for 30-50 miles inland) suggesting that this letter was landed at Gravesend; for a matching 1810 double letter to this address with S16, see Robertson p.E174A. Very few examples of this distinctive Ship Letter mark have been recorded. Cross Reference: NETHERLANDS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, KENT (Image)
