A railroad yard was built in Thoroughfare, about 12½ miles west of Manassas, to accommodate more than 20,000 Army & National Guard troops and Civil War veterans amassed at Thoroughfare, Gainesville and Lewis Crossing for "readiness" maneuvers that took place in early September of 1904. Immediately after the maneuvers ended, the yard was dismantled.
