Album of postmarks & covers including 1894 & 1895 local stampless with different 'PAID/BRISBANE' cds, 1895 stampless OHMS with superb oval 'MONEY ORDER OFFICE/BRISBANE' d/s in blue, 1896 to France with 'REGISTERED/GYMPIE' cds & French 'MODANE A PARIS' TPO transit in red, registered covers with black/white labels of Cardwell & Rockhampton, and with red & black/white labels of Brisbane, Cardwell, Gympie & Townsville, generally fine to very fine. Ex Ron Butler & 'Besancon'.(66 items)
1860 part-entire signed "CP Woolley" to Sydney with NSW Diadems Imperf 1d orange-red SG 109 horizontal strip of 6 with almost full margins (a little cut-into at right) tied by six fair to very fine strikes of Rays '131' (rated RRR), 22mm 'GLADSTONE/FE6(?)/1860/=NSW=' b/s, largely very fine 29mm unframed 'SHIP-LETTER/ D /FE11/1860/ =SYDNEY=' arrival b/s. One of the most attractive Moreton Bay District covers we have handled. [The addressee, Henry Thomas Fox, was a mariner & marine surveyor. One coastal ship of which he was master was the Phantom, owned by Thomas Woolley, who was almost certainly related to the writer of this letter]
1864 (Apr 19) cover from England with Stars 1d red x4 & 4d vermilion x2 tied by 'SEVENOAKS - 697' duplex, '[crown]/REGISTERED' h/s & oval REGISTERED/LONDON' d/s both in red but endorsed "No value" in magenta at left, to Poste Restante Brisbane GPO with arrival b/s of JU17/1864, sent to the DLO with a largely superb strike of the 29mm b/s, very fine combination of the oval 'ADVERTISED/AU29/1864' & 'UNCLAIMED/JY1/1864' d/s on the face, boxed 'UNCLAIMED' h/s in red on both sides (the only recorded strikes). Another important cover. Ex Bernie Beston & Bernie Manning.
1869 (Mar 22) cover to Somersetshire "via Marseilles" with scarce franking of 2d blue strip of 5 tied by Rays '87' of 'IPSWICH' (b/s), Brisbane transit b/s but unusually with no UK markings.
1870 (Mar 18) cover from England "via Southampton" with very fine 'HANDSWORTH/POSB' b/s & Plate 13 2d blue strip of 3 tied by superb 'BIRMINGHAM - 75' duplex, to "Brisbane Post Office/.../New South Wales" with arrival b/s & boxed 'NOT CALLED FOR' h/s, oval 'ADVERTISED/JY30/1870' d/s & apparently claimed by someone who added Chalons 6d yellow-green tied by bold 'QL-in-Rays & redirected the cover to "Orange/NSW" (b/s of AU31/70), forwarded to the Sydney DLO where boxed 'ADVERTISED/UNCLAIMED' h/s applied, flap removed & minor peripheral faults but 'eye candy' nonetheless. Ex Bernie Manning.
1873 (Dec 18) apparently overweight cover to Surrey with 6d apple-green tied by superb Rays '164' (rated RRRR on Chalons) & 'MOOLOOLAH' cds - (RRRRR; the only recorded example) below, faint Brisbane b/s & superb chamfered-boxed 'DEFICIENT POSTAGE 6/FINE 6 - 1/-' h/s on the face, ironed-out wrinkling but nevertheless lovely appearance. PO 1.8.1872; renamed Bury's as RO 1.3.1891; closed 1895. Ex Bernie Manning. [Mooloolah is 92km due N of Brisbane, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland]
1880 (June) underpaid cover with 'Australian Hotel/A DELEUSE/Brisbane' ribbon at U/L, to NSW with Chalons 3d brown tied by very fine Sydney duplex of JU14/1880 & superb double-oval 'LOOSE SHIP/LETTER' h/s alongside, '2D' tax h/s of Sydney, 'QUEANBEYAN' transit b/s & 'LANYON' arrival cds on the face, small faults that hardly detract from what is otherwise a really beautiful cover. Ex Alan Salisbury, Bernie Beston and Bernie Manning. [The inter-colonial ship letter rate was 3d, but there was a 1d fee for a loose letter. [Lanyon is in what is now the ACT]
1890 (Apr 12) cover to "Abo/Finland/Russia" with Lined Background 6d tied by Brisbane cds, transit b/s of St Petersburg (Cyrilic) in blue of 15/MAY/1890, 'KIVIMAA/FINLAND' & 'ABO-FINLAND' arrival b/s (affected by repaired flap fault). A very scarce pre-UPU destination.
