1911 commercial cover to "Mariehamn/Finland" with NSW ½d green single & block of 4 on the reverse & superb Sydney machine of JA21-1911 on the face, the stamps cancelled (where?) with pencil-squiggles, part-strike of the trilingual arrival backstamp. Marienhamn is the 'capital' of the Aland Islands, the most difficult European destination from Australia. The inhabitants speak Swedish but Sweden ceded the group to Russia in 1809 as part of the Grand Duchy of Finland. [The illustration is above Lot 444]
1913 (Sep 22) triple-rate cover to Switzerland with scarce CofA/State combination franking of Kangaroo 1d + Queensland ½d pair (one damaged) 2d & 3d all tied by Brisbane cds, shortpaid ½d so '10/CTMS/T' handstamp applied, Swiss 'TAVANNES/1.XI.13' arrival backstamp, two minor repaired tears and crumpling caused by the bulky contents. The foreign letter rate was 2½d x3 = 7½d.
1913 (Nov) Oriental Hotel envelope to California with scarce combination franking of Kangaroo First Wmk 3d (Die II ?) & Victoria 2½d tied by 'REGISTERED/ 1 /MELBOURNE' cds, red/white GPO R label, US 'REGISTERED' handstamp & two San Francisco backstamps of 30 & 31.12.1913 all in purple, light overall aging.
1915 usage to Perth of Ceylon PPC from an Australian soldier, superb 'AIF/Postage Fr[ee]' handstamp in violet, ship's name at upper-left obliterated by the censor.
1915 PMG's Department cover to the esteemed Parisian dealer Theodore Champion with an exceptional CofA/State combination franking of South Australia 2½d punctured 'OS' & Kangaroos 3d punctured Large 'OS' tied by Adelaide cds, red/white registration cds, very minor blemishes. Sold at our auction of 26.6.2017 for $1098. Theodore Champion was born in Switzerland but moved to Paris in 1899 where he was employed by Alfred Forbin, of Revenues fame. In 1902, he acquired Forbin's postage stamp business. In the 1920s, he purchased a large quantity of superb material from the Ferrari auctions, much of which has come onto the market only in the past 20 years or so, reinforcing his position as one of the great dealers of his era.
1915 (Feb 13) to Michigan with Kangaroos 1d red Die I coil stamps x8 including a vertical pair tied by 'GEORGE ST NORTH/NSW' cds with red/white R label alongside, the label overstruck with US 'REGISTERED' cachet in violet, Sydney & Chicago transits and Detroit 'MAR/17/1915' arrival backstamps, back flap missing & a few blemishes. The ACSC states that "the 1d Kangaroo was issued in coil form": all these stamps have trimmed perfs at right and correspondingly 'wide' perfs at left (to the point of the perforation holes being complete) consistent with being dispensed from a coil machine.
1915 (May 17) OHMS Birth Declaration folded form sent unfranked with 'OUSE/TASMANIA' cds, on arrival Kangaroo 1d red punctured 'T' affixed tied by 'HAMILTON/MY21/15/TASMANIA' cds on face to pay the postage. [The illustration is above Lot 450]

1915 two stampless covers from an Australian POW in Turkey to different relatives in England, the first with sender's endorsement "JH Wheat/No 319/Late Submarine AEII" on the flap which is sealed with Ottoman white/green censor label, very fine Arabic-script censor cachet on the face, London transit of DEC 8 15 in red on the face (making this one of the earliest confirmed mailings from Turkey), minor aging; the second sealed with similar white/red censor label & almost fine strike of a different censor cachet on the face, no transit or arrival markings, two vertical folds; and a Wills cigarette card of the vessel. [According to the Australian War Memorial website, there were 217 Australians held by the Ottomans as POWs, of which about one-third died in captivity. The sender, Able Seaman John Harrison Wheat, was aboard Submarine AE2 when it was sunk in the Dardenelles on 30.4.1915. These covers were probably sent while he was interned at a prison at Kiangheri (now Cankiri)]

There is no indication of the POW's name and it is unclear if the article was forwarded "as is" in a diplomatic bag, or if the contents were removed and forwarded separately. [According to the Australian War Memorial website, there were 217 Australians held by the Ottomans as POWs, of which about one-third died in captivity. Afion-Kara-Hissar was a remote camp in central Anatolia, situated about 250km WSW of Ankara]
1918 (May 23) use of KGV 'Star' 1d red Envelope to ".../New Zealand Forces/Prisoner of War/Afion-Kara-Hissar/Asia Minor", very fine 'BACKWATER/NSW' cds & 2-line cachet 'CARE OF RED CROSS...' that appears to have been applied at Sydney because it is partly obscured by the black/white censor label, very minor blemishes. [According to the NZ History website, there were only 25 New Zealanders held by the Ottomans as POWs, of which six died in captivity. The addressee, Private Reg Davie, was captured at Gallipoli 8.8.1915 & was released 5.11.1918. Afion-Kara-Hissar was a remote camp in central Anatolia, situated about 250km WSW of Ankara. The only example we have seen of the naval cachet, and possibly the only recorded example. The only reference we could find was in Bob Emery's Supplement at p172 where it is illustrated ("exact size unknown") & stated to have been used in conjunction with the backstamp of 5AU18, presumably a reference to this cover.
1918 (Nov 2) usage of Stamped To Order Envelope Star ½d yellow-green with KGV ½d dull yellow-green added for the newly introduced War Tax & tied by Adelaide 'HELP TO WIN THE WAR/...' slogan, unsealed as required for Printed Matter & with private '20 POSTED' handstamp in purple at upper-left, minor blemishes. A cracker: the War Tax was introducxed on 28.10.1918. Usage in the first week is rare.

1924 (March 24) cover to Epping (NSW) posted on board ship with Kangaroos 3d olive solo tied by Sydney cds with very fine complete strike of the 'LOOSE SHIP/* LETTER * ' oval undated handstamp (Hosking #1501; rated C) alongside, minor blemishes. The domestic letter rate was 1½d per 1oz plus 1½d late fee.
1928 (Oct 9) airmail to Mt Lawley WA with KGV 1½d red Die II & 3d blue Die I tied by very fine complete 'FORWARDED/BY AIR MAIL' handstamp in violet over-struck by largely very fine complete 'MUNDABULLANGANA/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' cds, small closed edge tear & small part back flap missing. Mundabullangana PO 16.7.1906; reduced to Free Bag 1.5.1919; closed ?. The 'FORWARDED ...' handstamp is recorded used here on this date only [see AAMC p36].
1928 (Nov 1) cover to Queensland "Per Aerial Mail via Hay" with Angel label, scarce albeit philatelic franking of Kookaburra M/S tied by the Exhibition cds in red with another strike in blue at left, blank provisional red R label, 'WOOLLOONGABBA' cds & 'UNCLAIMED AT/...' handstamp that also ties the M/S, boxed 'DLO RECORD' handstamp & Brisbane DLO backstamp, vertical fold clear of the stamps & labels, the M/S with minor gum-staining, light soiling. Proceeds to charity.
1930 apparently commercial cover to a Sydney solicitor with Sturt 1½d endorsed in manuscript "2d paid/ PM/LHI" and 'LORD HOWE_ ISLAND/22AU/1930/NSW' cds alongside ACSC 139c, a few faults but presentable, the stamp is very fine, Cat $3750 (for usage on 22/23.8.1930). From the first despatch of provisionals from the island, with the earliest recorded date of 22.8.1930, which would make this a rare & generally unrecognised First Day Cover. However, the RPSofV Certificate (2020) states "the manuscript notation on the stamp is forged". CP Dignan was a solicitor in the Manchester Unity Building. This supports our conclusion that the datestamp, and hence the cover, is genuine. Considering that the PO had no 2d stamps available, it seems likely that this cover was sent unstamped, before the PM came up with his idea to endorse 1½d stamps. However, someone has later added a passable forgery of an 'endorsed' stamp.
1930s commercial airmails both internal and with a range of overseas destinations including Austria with Greek currency censor, Germany at 2/1d 'all-the-way' rate (plus 3d registration), India, Netherlands, Papua, Singapore & South Africa, also noted 1933 to Pennsylvania endorsed "via USA Air Mail" with 6d Kookaburra for the foreign rate & registration fee plus KGV 1d & 3d for the internal US airmail, 1935 Hansford Reeve (Brisbane) 'Ranji Shaving Brushes' illustrated advertising long envelope airmail to Melbourne, 1936 IXL Jam illustrated advertising, 1936 to New Guinea with 2d SA Centy for the domestic letter rate plus KGV 1½d brown for the Port Moresby to Wau airmail surcharge, etc, condition a little mixed but mosty fine to very fine.

1930s-40s family correspondence to England with lots of better frankings including Kangaroos to 2/-, KGV Heads to 1/4d, ANZAC 1/-, SA Centenary 1/-, NSW Sesquicentenary 9d, etc, wartime 5/10d Clipper rate, censorship noted Newcastle label and a few to or re-directed India, also from other countries to the UK including from Canal Zone, Egypt, Hungary, India, KUT, New Zealand, New Guinea 1936 with Bird Airs 2½d & 3½d x5, Southern Rhodesia, Straits Settlements, Sudan, Switzerland, etc, plus 1937 KLM postcards x2 written on board plane to France, 1943 Bahamas airmail to India with 3/- Badge, and lots of pre-WWII incoming airmails from Great Britain to Australia noted one with official repair label and a few from India, then later commercial mail up to the 1970s to from & within Australia, condition rather mixed but plenty are fine to very fine.

1931 (Apr 30) British General Electric Co Ltd (Sydney) advertising cover to the head office in the English Midlands with Four Issue Five Colour Franking of Kangaroos 9d violet, KGV 1d green, 3d Airmail pair and Kingsford Smith 2d & 3d tied by 'AIR MAIL/SYDNEY NSW' cds, minor wrinkling caused by the contents. The Empire letter rate was 2d per ounce + domestic airmail supplement of 3d per half-ounce x2 + Karachi-London accelerated airmail fee of 6d per half-ounce x2 + 1d late fee = 21d = 1/9d.
1931 (May) illustrated cover for the Dutch flight to the Dutch Indies & on to Netherlands, unusually to Singapore only with 2/- Kangaroo solo leaving most of the rate information clear at upper-right. A scarce intermediate at the correct rate.
1934 illustrated cover for G Rimington Pty Ltd Nurserymen Kew (Vic) with Victoria Centenary 2d tied by commemorative slogan, the rverse with die-cut '.../CENTENARY/HORTICULTURAL/EXHIBITION/...' blue/yellow "shield" label.
1934 commercial airmail to Finland endorsed "Australia-Greece-Finland" with scarce franking of Macarthur 9d + Hermes 1/6d tied by Sydney cds of 7DE34. Carried on the first scheduled airmail service to England, ex Sydney 8.12.1934. Philatelic covers are common; commercial items are scarce; all-up airmail to Finland is rare.
1934 (Dec 9) airmail to England with Hermes 1/6d solo tied by Sydney cds, on arrival re-directed back to Australia by airmail with Great Britain KGV 1½d brown x2 & 1/- bistre affixed and 'WAHROONGA/7JA35/NSW' arrival backstamp, the letter to "Darling Mother" enclosed, a couple of minor blemishes.
