1d PINKS/2d EMBOSSED - 1840 1d ESSAY PLUS 1879 1d-2d PROOFS (4): Cutout of 1840 1d embossed Wyon head within oval engine turned surround in orange-red on wove paper - speculated by Huggins & Wicks in The 1840 Embossed Wyon-Whiting Essays (pp.120-1) to be an Essay to assess: "...the possibility of the forgery of embossed stamps by the electrotype process". Also fine proof impressions of 1d (2), 1½d, 2d dies with printing date "10/1/79" on laid paper plus fair brown 1d "12/2/80" on wove. Attractive group. (6) (Image)

Many commercial & private 1d Pink envs. & a collection of 1d Pink cut-outs on album pages. Also inc. three 1d Pink cut-outs, stuck on cover & postally used - 1859 (1 - with Edinburgh duplex) & 1869 (2 - with "STROUD CLOS." and "LONDON W.C" duplexes). Good lot. Mostly used. Endorsed "per Ship" at lower left, prepaid "8" pence (ms) in cash on departure in London on 25 Feb. with fine strike of circular crown "SHIP-LETTER/LONDON" cds in red. "2" pence handstamp for local delivery with "PORT VICTORIA/NEW ZEALAND" 23 July cds - both in black and struck on arrival. Inc. a note with further information. A very rare & spectacular usage.
