NAZAIRE" ROUTE PAIR EX LONDON - 1d LATE FEE PAIR OR "POSTED SINCE" TOO LATE C.D.S.; Attractive 12 June 1862 & 14 Sept. 1863 pair of Es (first with some ink-etching of address) from London to "Vera Cruz" both endorsed "Per French Packet & St. Nazaire" (scarce routing especially this early) franked respectively (for the ½oz or 2oz rates) with 1/- Green (2) or Small Letters 1/- Green Vertical Strip of Four; the 1862 cover also has a 1d Red 'Stars' (for the Late Fee) and the 1863 cover has a mainly fine scarce London "POSTED SINCE/7.30 LAST NIGHT" cds on the front. They also have mainly fine French steamer cds's of the "FLORIDE" (on reverse) or the "LOUISIANE" (on the front). The higher St. Nazaire route rate (8d per ¼oz) only lasted from 13 Apr. 1862 until 31 July 1863, so 1862 examples are seldom seen. Good pair.
