Nicaragua, 1901, Mt. Momotombo, the stamp as propaganda (Scott 121, 144), an interesting two-page write-up illustrating the use of the stamp as an argument against Nicaragua and in favor of Panama as the preferred route for the proposed canal; comprises a facsimile of engineer Banau-Varilla's notice to members of the US Congress, the stamp suggesting that Nicaragua was unsafe due to earthquake and volcanic eruption; also includes a 3c on 6c overprint mint and a used 5c entire showing the same scene, plus a photocopy of the 1977 Stamp Collector article giving the full story, Very Fine, an intriguing example of postal political intrigue.
