1880's-1920 Russian Post in Mongolia: 17 Russian stamps used in Urga and bearing various types of Russian Urga datestamps, starting with the early oval "URGA" + post horn datestamp (1880's-1894) on three stamps, followed by the rare single circle datestamp (in use 1895-1909) on four stamps, and later double circle datestamps (various types). A scarce group.

image 1928 Double-weight red-band cover sent from Uliasutai to Kalgan via Manchouli, franked on back by 1926 25m. vertical pair tied by squared "ULIASUTAI/26.5.28" datestamp in black, and with two Chinese junks 4c. olive applied at the Chinese border railway station "??????????" and tied by Manchouli '15.6.28' datestamp. The bilingual Kalgan '23 Jun. 17th year (1928)' indicates that this cover requires three weeks for the northern route from Uliasutai (Western Mongolia) by the Transsiberian railway via Tschita, by the Eastern Chinese railway via Manchouli and further on railroad to Kalgan near the Great Chinese Wall. An unusual double-weight cover from Uliasutai. (Image)

(without cancellation), which was not accepted for the complete 25m. rate, thus in China the cover was handstamped by circled "T" h/s with Chinese characters "Insufficient Fee" and franked at Kalgan by Chinese postage dues 20c. and 30c. blue tied by '21. Jan. 1932' cds, also with Manchouli '12.1.21 (1932)' transit dater and receiver's rubber h/s "Republic of China/22 January 21st year (1932)".
