Cinderellas, 1865, "Johnson's Box" labels, complete set of six labels, types I, II and III in green and red-orange (the type II green is unlisted by Springer), a rare complete set of these unusual labels; couple of small flaws, Fine to Very Fine lot. Estimate $500 - 750
According to the Springer catalog, McElroy's Philadelphia directory of 1865 lists J.H. Johnson as a stationer at 7 N. 10th Street, Johnson issued these labels in connection with his "Free P.O. Box", and the design was apparently issued to honor the martyred president; their status is uncertain though some specialists believe them to be advertising labels applied to letters taken from his mail-drop box, also included are two additional blue and black seven-line in shield labels . Suggested Bid $500-750 (Image)
