image THE RARE CRESCENT-FRAMED CROWNED PURPLE "MORE TO/PAY" ON COVER EX WILTSHIRE; 13 Dec. 1809 E to London "Post Paid" with fair "MARLBOROUGH/78" boxed mileage on the front with bold red m/s "P 1/2" and London red tombstone-framed "PAID" arrival d.s., but then found to be a treble letter and so charged "7" with a mainly fine strike of the rare and spectacular large purple-red London "[Crown]/MORE TO/PAY" mark (Jay L240; only known 1800-11 - filing fold hardly detracts) all on the front. Very few examples of this unusually fancy London mark have been recorded.Cross Reference: WILTSHIRE, POSTAGE DUE MARKS (Image)

image RARE FOREIGN BRANCH "SS" IN CIRCLE MARK ONLY KNOWN ON SWISS MAIL ROUTED VIA FRANCE; 24 Oct. 1816 EL (light stains along top fold, clear of marks) from "CHAUX DE FONDS" (v. fine mark on the front) in Switzerland to Warrington endorsed "Franco Pontarlier" with a faint "NEUCHATEL PAR/PONTARLIER" French entry-mark on the front, but also having a very fine small encircled "SS" mark (Jay L1057a; 1817-19 only - the few known examples all on mail from Switzerland) nicely place on the top flap. This mark was presumably used to distinguish mail from Switzerland via France from mails (charged rather less postage) that were sent from France direct, or via Germany. One of the rarest Foreign Branch marks and the earliest recorded example. [Ex Vandervelde.]Cross Reference: SWITZERLAND, FRANCE (Image)
