image THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE SMALL BLACK "(Crown)/ Too Late for/Morng·Post" MARK; 6 March, 1814 EL (archival tape inside folds and some slight staining, mainly internal) from Ashtead (Surrey) to London having a fine "EPSOM/19" mileage mark & fine scarce red London "G P" mark (creased) on the front, but endorsed "Not known at Brunswick Square" on the flap and "Supposed Finsbury Sqe" on the front; also with a very fine (light fold) BLACK framed "(Crown)/Too Late for/ Morng· Post" mark [Jay L703 - known only in red - this was the discovery example in black and so was listed in Jay's 2005 2nd edition as L703a] on the lower flap. There are a few flecks of red ink within the black ink but this is clearly an accidental (and so one off) use of the wrong ink-pad for this mark. This is still the only known local London "Too Late" mark in black and as such is a significant Exhibition item. [Ex Grace Dove 1995, and ex Hugh Feldman; latter in Cavendish, Oct. 2002, lot 4592, realised £340+BP]. Cross Reference: LATE FEE/TOO LATE MAIL, SURREY (Image)
