France 1850, Ceres 10c. bistre, single stamp and horizontal pair, fresh colour but cut into, clearly postmarked by PC "3337", 30c. rate on "rayon limitrophe" letter from "THANN 19 MARS 1853" (Alsace) to Schönau/Wiesental/Grand Duchy of Bade via Basel with transit mark "SUISSE ST.LOUIS 19 MARS 53" on reverse. France 1849, Ceres 20c. black, fresh colour, cut into/slight imperfections, single franking on "rayon limitrophe" letter paying only domestic rate from "GIROMAGNY 8 AVRIL 49" to Basel with boxed "DEP.LIMIT." and ms. "Troiver a la Boite" (found in letter box) alongside, on reverse transit mark "BELFORT 9 AVRIL 49" and same-day arrival marks (French and Swiss P.O.). The rate to Basel was 30c., mail had to be posted either fully paid or unpaid, partly franked mail wasn't accepted, the 20c. adhesive therefore was void, and the letter consequently charged upon arrival with "4" (rappen) in ms.
