image JAMAICA - OUTGOING FREE FRANK (ABUSE OF PRIVILEGE!) FROM LONDON TO "ST. JAMES', JAMAICA"; Fine 4 Nov. 1824 EL (long and interesting letter from the wife of the addressee, [Mrs. "E. Murray") sent from "London" to "Garland Grove, St. James', Jamaica" but franked illegally by "[later Sir] H[enry] Taylor" (1800-86; senior clerk in the Colonial Office at this date) with a very fine red London crowned "FREE" d.s., and with no British or Jamaican charges at all. The Murrays thus avoided 2s-6d Packet postage. Free Franks to the West Indies are rare. [Ex Drs. Harper, Cavendish 19 Mar. 2009, lot 2390; realised £160+BP.]Cross Reference: POSTAL REFORMS, JAMAICA (Image)

image FRANCE - P.O. "FREE" COVER (REF. LETTER HELD FOR 2s-6½d POSTAGE) ONLY CHARGED FRENCH POSTAGE; 19 Mar. 1839 printed EL with "O.H.M.S./W.L. Maberly" address-side imprint to someone care of the "Poste Restante" in Nice charged "12[decimes]" on delivery although having no British rate and a red crowned London "FREE" d.s.; the contents state that a transit letter to the addressee in Nice with 2s-6½d postage owing is held in London. Much rarer than the equivalent Freeling pre-1840 version, because Maberly only held the office of P.O. Secretary from 1836 to 1839, whereas Freeling was in office from 1798 to 1836. Rare thus.Cross Reference: FRANCE, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, OFFICIAL MAIL (Image)
