18th CENTURY CARTOON OF A SCOTSMAN POSTED AS A FREE FRANKED LETTER!; Remarkable and very fine unfolded 20 Jan. 1784 comic print (12x9¾ ins.) entitled "A Posthaste Conveyance for S[cottish] Members", published by "Jas. Bretherton, New Bond Street" depicting a village finger-post "To London" above a flying letter with "Free" in circle mark addressed "To The Majority, St. Stephen's, Westmr." and endorsed "Free Duke or no Duke" at foot and containing a puzzled looking Scotsman with head sticking out of one end and feet the other! Presumably a reference to the reforms of the franking privilege of 1784. The only example that we can recall having seen.Cross Reference: SCOTLAND, PICTORIALS, PRINTED, POSTAL REFORMS (Image)
