SUSSEX - PRIVATELY CARRIED PRE-CIVIL WAR LETTER EX "FRISTON" TO "HASTINGS"; 31 May 1640 EL (some light stains) from "Fra[ncis]. Selwyn" in "Friston" (near Eastbourne) addressed to "his loving freinde George Esson at Hasting[s] these [be] d[elivere]d", asking for an action against Joshua Bennet to be started. Apparently not received until "16 June 1640" although the letter only had to travel about 21 miles along the coast. Pre-1642 short-distance mail is seldom seen from the English counties.Cross Reference: SUSSEX, EARLY LETTERS (Image)

NORFOLK - 1661 LOCAL LETTER SENT BY CARRIER "JNO. TUCKER" ENDORSED "WITH 3 POCKES"; 11 Dec. 1666 EL sent by "Geo. Harper" from "Yarmouth" [Norfolk] to Norwich (c20 miles) and endorsed "with 3 pockes" [i.e. bags - vide "pig in a poke"] and so sent by a common carrier. The contents include; "...I have Per Jno Tucker sent you two bag nutts of Bro. Sam., marked GH. I have more... but am in hast. Sell, them as you can for him...". It looks as if he added a third bag at the last minute. Fine example of a letter sent legally by carrier because it accompanied goods.Cross Reference: NORFOLK (Image)
