CROMWELLIAN PERIOD LETTER [EX PLYMPTON?] SENT PRIVATELY DUE TO FEAR OF "INTERCEPTING" MAIL; Very fine "Januarie 6th 1656" EL (full typed transcript) to London carried privately ("I presume to certifie you herwith by this for feare of the intercepting of the former") and signed by "Elize [Elizeus] Stert" who was a merchant living in the village of Brixton near Plympton at this date. With research notes. [A similar Sept. 1654 letter from this same correspondence but sent by post with "3d" charge was in the Christies "TES" auction on 5 Oct. 1995, lot 13; realised £1,035. Another that was carried privately on 24 Dec. 1656 was for sale online in May 2023 for £1,250.] Rare example of a letter mentioning fears of the interception of mail during the Cromwellian Period.
