CORNWALL - SCILLY ISLANDS
Sale No: 853
Lot No: 2742
Symbol:
TRESCO/ST. MARY's - VERY HIGH POSTAL RATE ("1oz 4/4") ON STRAIGHT-LINE "SCILLY" COVER TO LONDON; Mar. 1833 E with red wax "JL" seal (and distinctive hand-writing) of the long-term Tresco S.P.C.K. Missionary James Lane (known to have been on Tresco from 1818 to at least 1839) to Rev. Parker (of the S.P.C.K.) in London and so probably written from Tresco. There are two semi-albino or over-inked strikes of the St. Mary's "SCILLY" mark on the flap, and the unusually high "4/4" rate (4 times the 1s-1d quarter-ounce rate) is confirmed with a matching m/s "1 oz" on the front. One of the very few prestamp covers from the Scillies that weighed an ounce or more.Cross Reference: POSTAGE DUE MARKS (Image)
