image United States, 1936, "FRAUDULENT" handstamps, two different on an Airmail cover from San Francisco to the Hospital Trust, Ltd, Dublin, I.F.S. (Irish Free State), Aug 26, 1936; one with "Mail to this address returned by order of Postmaster General", the other, "Business of addressee declared fraudulent by Order of Post Office Department, New York, N.Y., Sep 10, 1936"; there is no return address, so the letter ended up in the New York Dead Letter as "Minor Letter No. 3073", Very Fine,

The Hospital Trust, Ltd. was the original name for the Irish Sweepstakes, created to fund Ireland's hospitals. But since lotteries were illegal in the U.S., the business was appropriately declared fraudulent. Many years later, the Sweepstakes were found to be a huge scam. Only 10% of the money raised went to the hospitals, with the rest making the founders and the people who might be valuable to them, very wealthy.
