June 1914 (AAMC.2) Melbourne - Sydney Official Souvenir postcards for proposed first official airmail flight by AB 'Wizard' Stone which was cancelled following a crash on 1 June which extensively damaged the plane and badly injured Stone, the cards subsequently carried by rail with the Kangaroo 1d red frankings tied 'SYDNEY/AU24/NSW/1914' roller cancels on arrival, the former with 'WIZARD STONE' crossed out and replaced by manuscript 'Guillaux Pilot', the latter with Frommer 'TF' marking on address side, both with minor blemishes, Cat $1,600. Nov.1919 - Feb.1920 (AAMC.27a) Batavia - Sydney intermediate, flown cover carried by Ross & Keith Smith on their flight from England in the Vickers Vimy. The cover shows a fine example of the vignette accompanied by Netherlands Indies adhesives, all tied by multiple strong strikes of the oval "FIRST AERIAL MAIL" cachet. The cover, #14 in the Frommer listing (illustrated at page 25) is one of the more spectacular examples, bearing advertising for the "Oranje Hotel" in Soerabaia and is one of only 15 identified by Frommer as having originated in the Dutch East Indies and one of only 2 with DEI adhesives.

30 July 1920 (AAMC.47) Melbourne - Traralgon cover, flown by Captain E.W. Leggett for "The Herald & Weekly Times"; with special purple of yellow "By HERALD AERIAL DELIVERY" vignette attractively tied on the front of the envelope which also bears a Victorian 1½d adhesive + Queensland ½d tied on arrival at Traralgon. [Of 266 items reported to have been flown, very few appear to have survived].

THE FIRST CROSSING OF THE PACIFIC BY AIR 31 May 1928 (AAMC.122) USA - Australia cover flown by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Charles Ulm, J Warner & H Lyon in the Fokker FV11B-3M 'Southern Cross' on the first crossing of the Pacific by air, franked with USA Airmail 10c Map (5) and 5c Roosevelt uncancelled but endorsed "carried across the Pacific Ocean from California to Australia" signed "JW Warner, Radio Opr" on face and further endorsed and signed by the whole crew including "CKingsford Smith" on back. Cat $25,000 (four flown),also, a photograph of the crew with benefactor Captain Hancock in the USA and 1941 Statutory Declaration by his nephew J Kingsford Smith authenticating the cover and confirming the signatures were 'made in my presence'. 1930 (AAMC.163e) 3d Green Airmail stamp, complete booklet of 12 stamps + 12 airmail labels; covers black on pale green with "USE THE AIR MAIL" on front. Unusually fresh.
The Australian 3d green airmail stamp issued on 20 May 1929 was later made available in booklets of 12 stamps. This cover design and wording was used after July 1935 to include reference to the Australia - Singapore - England Airmail Service although a very small number of these survive intact today. The booklets only remained on sale until the end of 1936 when the remainders were withdrawn and destroyed. [See also SG. SB24a, Cat.£1700].

1 Aug.1930 Amsterdam to Hamburg flown cover headed "Southern Cross Herdenking" [Commemoration], signed by Charles Kingsford Smith and carried by him on a commercial flight following his trans-Atlantic flight in June 1930. Kingsford Smith had been staying with Anthony Fokker while recuperating from an illness before returning to Australia. [35 covers thus carried.]The "Southern Cross", a Fokker F.VIIb/3m trimotor monoplane, was the aeroplane most closely associated with Kingsford Smith's career. (Image)

21 Aug.1936 roughly opened cover London-Melbourne, participant in the famed 'Desert incident', where Horsa on Aug 29, during Imperial Airways service flight IE473 (departed Aug.22), overshot Bahrain Aerodrome by 100kms at night, a consequence of the airfield lights not having been switched on, the pilots becoming lost and making a forced-landing in the desert, at Salwa Wells. The aircraft was found 40 hours later, and mail and passengers were flown out by RAF Mail to connect with IE474-75, the service delayed five days. Melbourne backstamp (blurred) Sept.14. Only two covers from this major incident believed recorded to Australia. Sanford: 360809. [The Perry example realized $3495 in 2013]. CRASH COVER: Dec.1942 airmail cover recovered from RAAF Beaufort A-119 (7 Squadron), which ditched in the sea on 9 December, near Wednesday Island (off Thursday Island), 'DAMAGED MAIL/SALVAGED FROM SEA' label affixed, signed and tied by 'FIELD P.O./0101' cds of Thursday Island. One of the rarest crash covers of Australia, missing from most major aerophilately collections. Unlisted AAMC and Nierinck. Will be included in the next edition of AAMC, currently in preparation.
