Interesting but somewhat haphazard collection with lots of better stamps including 'One Penny' Surcharges complete abc singles, high denominations mostly with telegraph cancels (a 10/- & £1 have bogus cancels), some abc strips & larger multiples including ½d block of 15 (3x5) & forme of 30, 1d red block of 12 (3x4), 9d block of 6 (3x2), Fifth Setting 2d block of 12 (3x4) & forme of 30, also 'OS' perfins x7 (not expertised) and forged overprints x7, condition variable but much is fine to very fine. 1915-16 Overprints on Kangaroos First Watermark 5/- grey & yellow SG 83 type a overprint, small-part 'MADANG/----17' cds, quite well-centred, some short/uneven perfs at top & left, Cat £3750. A very scarce stamp, especially used. Ex Andrew Johnston. Peter Holcombe Certificate (1994).
1915-16 Overprints on Kangaroos First Watermark 5/- grey & yellow SG 83 type c overprint, part 'MADANG/--JA17' cds, quite well-centred, a few perforation issues including a pulled perf at lower-left & a perf tip added at upper-right, Cat £3750. A very scarce stamp, especially used. Ex Andrew Johnston. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2007) "genuine in all respects, contemporary cancel".
1918-22 Fifth Setting on KGV Heads 1d carmine-red Die I Substituted Cliché SG 103a, well-centred, light but legible '[MO]ROBE/-7AP20' cds cancel, Cat £650. Ex Andrew Johnston.
1918-22 Fifth Setting on Kangaroos 6d blue Die IIB SG 110b mint & used examples with very similar centring, Cat £1100. Our vendor states "Although the characteristic break above 'ST' of 'AUSTRALIA' is over-inked, they are defintely Die IIB". [The catalogue prices are interesting. In the 2023 edition, Gibbons priced mint at £800 and used was unpriced. In the new edition, mint is £350 and used is at £750] (2)

1918-22 Fifth Setting on KGV Heads Large Multiple Watermark ½d green with the Watermark Inverted SG 119w block of 6 (2x3), the upper-left unit with Eight Wattles at Left [Pos 4L3], five units with small hinge remainders, the variety unit unmounted, £840+ for mounted normal singles. Ex Andrew Johnston.
PUNCTURED 'OS': Three pieces 1) with 2d orange, 3d olive, 4d ultramarine, 6d grey-blue & 1/- blue-green SG O18 O8 O21 O9a & O10 tied by 'RABAUL/9AP23/NEW BRITAIN' (normal 'N') and with rubber R cachet; 2) with 2d orange, 3d olive & 6d grey-blue SG O18 O8 & O9a tied by 'RABAUL/2JL23/NEW BRITAIN' cds (Reversed 'N'); and 3) with 1d violet & 6d ultramarine (perfs at top impacted by the 'OS') SG O17 & O9 tied by 'RABAUL/11JE24/NEW GUINEA' cds; Cat £1450, for loose stamps. A very scarce trio.

POSTAL HISTORY: 1916 (Aug 22) cover with 'Church of England/(Home Mission)/Men's Room/Expeditionary Forces/Rabaul, New Britain' imprint at upper-left and sealed on the reverse with 'KAISERL DEUTSCHES POSTAMT/[eagle]/RABAUL/(DEUTSCH-NEUGUINEA)' blue/white wafer, registered to Western Australia with NWPI 6d blue type a solo tied by slightly smudged 'RABAUL' cds, German-pattern 'Deutsch-Neuguinea' black & red/white R label tied by manuscript "Sargt E Collins/On Active Service" endorsement, large-part 'Passed by Censor/RABAUL' handstamp in violet on face, Perth transit & 'GUILDFORD/SP20/16/WA' arrival backstamps, a few mostly minor aging marks.
