image Mexico, 1856, First Issue, 2r yellow green, Lagos. Singles on two folded letters from soldier (Republican army) Juan Evangelista Mugarrieta (younger brother of Jose M. Mugarrieta, Consul of Mexico in San Francisco) to family in Mexico City; first with Lagos district overprint and tied by oval Tepatitlan cancel (Schatzkes 696A) with additional "Franco" and Tepatitlán boxed handstamps (Schatzkes 692A, 692) on 1858 folded letter, interesting content telling of just having received new uniforms, of the enemy (conservative) forces facing them and of the expected attack from (General Manuel) Lozano coming from Tepic, enemy force details described, protecting bridge crossing at Colotlán, letter would have had to travel into conservative held territory before mailing to Mexico City, Tepatitlán is 190 miles (317 Km) South from Colotlan, the distance the letter would have traveled before mailing, second with Guadalajara district overprint tied by Guadalajara oval cancel (Schatzkes 295) on 1859 folded letter telling he is well and has sent 90 pesos, letter would have crossed battle lines into conservative held territory and Mexico City, or Juan would have crossed lines before writing this, Very Fine.

Complete sheet of 60, full o.g., with complete unreduced selvage all around, some folds mostly between stamp but one affecting 6th horizontal row, few natural preprinting paper wrinkles, F.-V.F., a great rarity with only three sheets recorded, another sheet was auctioned by us in 2016 for $6,000 hammer.

Vertical pre-printing paper fold, tied by mute grid handstamp on December 10, 1863 folded letter to Madrid, Spain endorsed "Via de Inglaterra", carried to Bordeaux with blue Georges Rafford oval forwarding handstamp, boxed "Apres le Depart" handstamp as letter arrived too late for the British steamer Tampico, reverse with transit and receiving cds's, letter with interesting content regarding the mails and the war…Por motivo de las muy críticas circunstancias por que está atravesando esta República, el gobierno ha suspendido toda clase de comunicaciones con los frentes ocupados por los francesas, y sólo a fuerza de instancias y de ruegos, se ha podido conseguir el que hoy salga un extraordinario para Veracruz conduciendo solamente correspondencia para Europa, with further notation… Los franceses se han movido rumbo a Puebla, cuya población defiende el ejército mejicano. Manuel supo tarde de la salida de este correo, Very Fine, this being one of the first correspondences allowed by the French to be forwarded addressed to a foreign destination.

Cons 5-1866 on a piece in combination with 1865, Eagle (4th Period), 2r orange, Tampico, cons 200-1865, Maximilian stamp tied by Veracruz town cancel (Schatzkes 1757A) and Eagle issue tied by Tampico grid handstamp (Schatzkes 1578), with town cancel dated Aug 31, the Eagle stamp was affixed first in Tampico once the issue was demonetized and received in Veracruz were the Maximilian stamp was added to correct for the error, Very Fine, one of the key rarities of both issues, there are only two recorded cases of combination of these 2 issues, the other is a cover which sold years ago in private treaty in $30,000, with 1998 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.

In combination with 1868, 12c black on green, Matamoros, both cons 9-71, and additional 1868, 12¢ black on green, Tampico, cons 39-71 cut from an uncanceled letter, on July 1872 folded letter from Matamoros to Guanajuanto, carried privately by agent Enrique Duprat of Tula de Tamaulipas with oval handstamp on reverse, entered the mails in San Luis Potosi with 1872, 12c blue + 25c red, San Luis Potosi, cons 37-72 affixed and all stamps canceled by fancy "Franco" handstamps (Schatzkes 1461), Very Fine, a unique unaccepted demonetized and postal fraud usage bearing stamps from three different districts, ex-Rosenthal, signed Lami and Calves, with 1987 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.
