image 1796 FL from Alloa, Scotland, charged 3 pence to cover the 33 miles distance to Glasgow, where a 7 pence rate was charged (5p to cover the journey of 129 miles to Port Patrick and 2p additional for the Port Patrick to Donaghadee Packet Boat). A final rate of 11p was charged (additional 4p covering the 94 miles to Dublin, Ireland). Anticipating an invasion of Ireland by France in 1796, troops were sent to reinforce the defenses of Scotland and Ireland. This letter was posted from an Irish officer garrisoned in Alloa, Scotland to a colonel stationed at the Dublin Barracks in Ireland. The text mentions the defenses being constructed in Scotland against the invasion, fine, ex-Pedneault (Image)
