image SAN FRANCISCO July 2, well-struck straightline handstamp with magenta manuscript "July 2" and "40" rate on folded letter datelined "Sacramento City, June 26" and begins with "Dear Brother Chas., I have but a moment to write before we are off for the diggers on the north fork of the American river about fifty miles from this place…they are getting from one to four ounces of gold a day. I do not think there is a great prospect of getting rich but we shall see…We are all together now, in good spirits & are determined to try our try our luck with our wash bowls & shovels. No man need come here without expecting the experience much sacrifice of comfort. If we are permitted to return in safety, I shall be grateful. There is no danger here or at the mines from robberies. We have arrived here just in time for the best digging. " to Painted Post NY, Very Fine strike, the first handstamp used at the San Francisco post office, carried on the PMSS Oregon on July 2. image Connecticut Classic Covers, comprising #10A from Middletown on third day of use, #11A on front with pen "X" cancel and tied by "PAID" alongside "Glastonbury Ct. Sep. 19" circular datestamp which the owner purchased as a rare colored cancel, #11A on 1853 folded letter with scarce blue "PAID" in grid of Yantic, six #26/26A covers from different towns including one forwarded twice (#11/#26/#26), #63 vertical pair paying local drop letter rate in Washington, #63 with beautiful flower cancel of Ridgefield (Skinner Eno PP-Fl 23; used only in 1861), 3 #65 covers Pomroy ad cover from Pleasant Valley, West Granby fancy cancel and Waterbury Shield used on forwarded cover from Boston, also includes a faulty #14 with a bold "T" manuscript cancel on cover from Brooklyn NY to Long Bar Cal., with original 1856 letter from sister to brother - first page discusses how the money received was allocated and the second page is family matters including the father being in poor health and now living with the sister, who says all is otherwise well except for the family of Capt. Redfield, PM Greenwood D.T." free frank at top right, on yellow cover to "Miss Maggie Catlin care Mrs. Prof M. Catlin, Clinton, Oneida Co., New York", an Extremely Fine cover, superb in every respect, this is the later of the 2 reported examples of this cancel which was used 8 months before Dakota became an official territory on March 2, 1861.


The other example sold for $5,250 hammer in 2000. This cover has been off the market since 1992.
