Sanitary Fair, Stamford, Conn., 1864, 15¢ pale brown (Scott WV15), a marvelous mint example, o.g., lightly hinged, with fresh color and large balanced margins, Extremely Fine, with a 2017 P.F. certificate. Scott $4,250.
ARGUABLY THE FINEST OF ONLY EIGHT RECORDED EXAMPLES.
The Stamford Soldiers' Fair ran for only three days, Wednesday through Friday, July 27-29, 1864. The Kantors, in their Sanitary Fairs: A Philatelic and Historical Study of Civil War Benevolences, surmise that the Fair's brief duration accounts for the rarity of its stamps: only eight unused and five used examples are recorded. This example is the bottom stamp in the left column of the partial block of eight pictured in Kantors' Fig. 151, on page 156. (Image)
