The letter contains manuscript filing notations indicating the letter (not contained in the envelope) was from D.B. Hamilton, one of the founders of Rogers & Brother, a noted Silver Manufacturer with production facilities in Waterbury. The docketing notes "June 18, and June 22 1868"., Three examples recorded. Rogers & Brother in Waterbury at that time, manufactured only flatware. Mr. Abner Johnson Leavenworth was born in Waterbury CT July 2, 1803. In 1844, he became the principal and proprietor of the Leavenworth Academy and Collegiate Seminary for Young Ladies. This was a noted southern institution and was instrumental in founding the Virginia Educational Society. Levenworth died in Petersburg, VA on February 12, 1869. (Image)

This cover is used far out of the period of other examples of F-14. The shamrock handstamp is worn, and it is accompanied by a strike of the Naugatuck Railroad Route Agent’s date stamp. It is probable that the letter was handed to a Waterbury clerk after the mails were closed and bagged. As a favor to the sender, he cancelled the stamp with the first "killer" that came to hand and handed the cover to the Route Agent who applied his own date stamp.(Image)
