image One of Two Recorded First Day Covers of The United States City Despatch Post, Marking The Takeover of Greig's Local Post by The U.S. Government., bold orange-red "U.S. City Despatch Post, Aug. 16, 9 O'Clock" Type I circular datestamp on 1842 printed notice "Boston Shipping List" addressed to New York City, magenta manuscript "1" rate, two tiny tears at top not noted on certificate, otherwise a lovely Very Fine appearance, purchased by the consignor at the 1992 Rarities sale, two known, ex-Middendorf, with 1991 P.F. certificate.


The City Despatch Post run by Greig started February 1, 1842 and ended August 15, 1842 when the U.S. Post Office Department acquired the City Despatch Post, turning it into an official U.S. carrier run by Greig. (Image)

image New York, N.Y., U.S. City Despatch Post, 1842, 3¢ black on grayish (Scott 6LB1), Greig's stamp used as a carrier stamp, only 19 examples of #6LB1 on a cover are recorded with a mere 15 confirmed as genuine full covers; furthermore, this is one of only two known with "U.S." in octagon cancel without a circular datestamp and unquestionably among the finest extant, the stamp has very large margins all around and is tied by two strikes of the red "U .S." in octagon cancel on a Nov. 16, 1842 folded letter written to a gentleman on behalf of a lady from Missouri inviting him to meet her that evening, Extremely Fine, purchased by the consignor at the 1992 Rarities sale. Larry Lyons, an expert on the subject, compiled the census of 19 which he published in the October 2004 issue of The Penny Post (https://www.pennypost.org/pdf/penny-post-archive/PennyPost200410.pdf), with 1990 P.F. certificate.
