1914, 1¢ green, S.L. watermark, perf 10 x 12 (Scott 423D), Dayton, Ohio precancel, an immaculate stamp with deep color and sharp lines on pristine paper; precancel overprint split as nearly always, Very Fine, a great rarity, with only 51 singles and five covers reported (none known unused), with 2001 P.F. (as #424b) and 2019 P.S.E. certificates,
An interesting (and valuable) result of changing production methods. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing at the time was converting from perf 12 to perf 10 machinery, with the unintended effect that limited quantities of 1¢ 2¢ and 5¢ issues were run through differently set machines, resulting in these mixed-perforation items.
