Canal Zone, 1924, 1c-1b Coat of Arms complete, including the unissued denominations (Scott 68-69 and vars.), disturbed o.g., bright colors, mostly Very Fine. Unissued values signed A. Brun.
In late 1923, Panama advised the Canal Zone authorities of its intent to issue a new set of stamps featuring the Coat-of-Arms of the Republic. Canal Zone placed an order for nine of these values (1 centesimo through 1 Balboa) with the "CANAL ZONE" overprint. That order was received from the American Bank Note Company in early 1924. However, only the 1c and 2c denominations were ever issued, the need for the remaining denominations being obviated by the abrogation of the Taft Agreement. All of the unissued stamps were subsequently destroyed, with the exception of 600 copies of each value that were requested by Panama for transmittal to the U.P.U. A small number of these reached the public, although not through "normal" channels. Scott $2,467 Estimate $1,500-2,000 (Image)

The "ZONE ZONE" always occurs in position 18 of the lower right pane of 100 from plates 15571 and 16332. Canal Zone, 1962, 4¢ Thatcher Ferry Bridge, silver (bridge) omitted (Scott 157a), a choice mint example, o.g., never hinged, Post Office fresh and virtually perfectly centered with position "18" (of 50) lightly in pencil on the reverse, Extremely Fine to Superb, a top-notch example of this iconic error, with a 1992 P.F. certificate.
During the preparation of Thatcher Ferry Bridge first day covers, a clerk noticed that a plate block was missing the silver plate number and that the stamps were missing the silver bridge. The authorities made an immediate search and found the remaining 46 stamps from that pane and two additional panes with the error. Shortly thereafter, H. E. Harris & Co. discovered the upper right pane with the missing bridge error in its shipment of 5,000 stamps from the Canal Zone Philatelic Agency. Canal Zone authorities ordered 100,000 copies of the error be reprinted for sale at face value through the Philatelic Agency and began accepting orders. Harris filed suit for an injunction against the special printing and, after two-and-a-half years, won the case and halted the reprinting. The two intact panes were laminated and gifted to the Smithsonian's National Collection and the Canal Zone Library museum. The broken third pane was destroyed, leaving only Harris' pane for philatelists. Scott $8,000 Estimate $6,000-8,000 (Image)
