AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE MARKING—ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED AND THE ONLY ONE ON FOREIGN MAIL.

The official Registered Mail System in the U.S. did not begin until July 1, 1855. Prior to that, several post offices had their own markings for recording valuable mail, the best known being Philadelphia's "R" for "Recorded". A few towns near the Canadian border adopted the Canadian term, "Money Letter".
