image [Personal], O. Sackett, the Yankee Card Writer, "The most accomplished writer in the World,—now in this City, at Jones' Hotel"; illustration of the writer covering the entirety of the reverse of the cover (extending across the flap as well—a neat printing trick); franked with 1851 3¢ Washington on front tied by SEP 30 Philadelphia, PA, datestamp; addressed to Ercildoun P.O., Chester County, PA, a stunning piece of self-advertising; slight staining along envelope's edge above, but not affecting, portrait; front shows faint reverse offset of magenta "Insured" handstamp, nevertheless Very Fine.
Estimate $200 - 300

Orsemus Sackett (1826-96) made a prosperous living in the 1850s and early 1860s as a card-writer, "travelling the eastern cities and producing at high speed elegant hand-written visiting cards for discerning customers" (The Sackett Family Association website). This envelope was used to announce his sojourn at Jones' Hotel on Chestnut Street, promoting himself and his penmanship. His flair for promoting himself is evident by the final words at the bottom of the envelope: "Use this."
