Confederacy, Army of Tenn. Straightline cancel ties 10¢ greenish blue (11c AD), repaired, on buff cover to Mr. B. Criswell, Columbia SC in Care of Capt Senn. Capt Senn, who was in command of the Richland Jail prison in Columbia, some toning and soiling, F.-V.F. appearance, a rare Army of Tenn straightline use, ex-Conrad Bush. Estimate; $400 - 600.
Four Criswell brothers (Bud, JB, Joseph, RP) enlisted at the same time (Jan 1862) in the 19th SC Inf. A 5th brother, Thomas, also enlisted in the same unit in Feb 1864. Bud, Thomas, and Joseph were declared unfit for field service because of illness and joined Capt Senn's Post Guard. The addressee was Bud Criswell, a member of the post guard at the Richland Jail.
