image 1900 1c Printed Matter Rate Cover to Sweden, mailed from Montréal on OCT.25 (Bickerdike Type 8 flag cancel) to Overum, Sweden with JAN.9.1901 receiver, the cover received a purple boxed "Inconnu" plus a purple boxed "Retur" and was mailed back to the Ottawa Dead Letter Office (FEB.4.1901 oval receiver). There is interestingly a Montréal carrier datestamp dated FEB.1 on back. At some point the cover was taxed with various rates plus a boxed "T", possibly because the (missing) backflap was partially stuck, thus negating the requirements for passing as a printed matter rate. A very fine cover which was in transit for 102 days. (Image)

image 1901 2c Empire Numeral Cover to England, Re-Directed to Italy with Italian Postage Due Stamps, mailed from Toronto (JUN.28 Die C Exposition flag machine cancel) to London, England (JUL.6 receiver), re-directed to Milan, Italy on JUL.8 (London despatch on front) with Milan and Rome backstamps. The 2c QV Numeral franking was sufficient for the travel to London, but the Italian Post Office affixed 15c (equivalent to 3c) in postage due stamps to charge the addressee the difference for a 5c letter rate to Italy. Under U.P.U. regulations, double-deficiency charges did not apply to letters correctly prepaid to their original destinations. A few minor wrinkles, still an interesting cover with Milan Grand Hotel advertising handstamp on back. (Image)
