image United States, U.S. Airmail, Adams Airmail "Pick Up" collection, Dr. Adams devised a system for Airmail like that used by speeding trains that could snatch a mailbag from poles along the tracks. In his system the mail bag was suspended from two 40 foot poles so that a low-flying plane could snag the mail bag with a hanging hook. This greatly increased the speed of delivery to rural areas starting in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia and similar services quickly sprung up to offer airmail delivery to ships and remote areas all over the world. The company grew into what is currently known as U.S. Airways. This collection focuses on the inventory of the "Pick Up" bag and consists of approximately 15 covers, 8 of which are signed by Dr. Adams and several with Pilots signatures with some great supplementary material; post cards, brochures, flyers, autographs and photos about the mail drop system, generally Fine to Very Fine.
