image Fort Craig, N.M. "23 Oct.". Complete strike of crude cds with manuscript date and matching "Free" rating on 1861 blue folded letter to Brig. Gen. L. Thomas, Adjutant General, U.S. Army, Washington D.C. endorsed "Official Business" and letter from Capt. N.B. Ropell datelined "Fort Craig, N Mexico, October 22, 1861" reading "I write to inform you that I am at present encamped at this Post having arrived here from Albuquerque N.M. on the 20th"; file fold toning, an exceptional postmark from Fort Craig.

Fort Craig was established in 1854. It was intended to guard the north-south routes along the Rio Grand River against roving bands of Apache Indians.

Incoming cover bearing Prussia 3pf red violet (14a) pair, 1s rose (17), strip of three and three singles, all tied by multiple strikes of "Beuthen, Loeberschlesien, 8 2 66" framed handstamp, endorsed "Pr Hamburg; reverse with Hamburg (2.10) transit, blue crayon "Wf 4½" rating, carried by HAPAG Borussia from Hamburg departing Feb. 17th to New York arriving Mar. 8th, red "Hamburg Packet, Paid 3" exchange credit cds for 3¢ inland postage via rail to Independence Mo. and then Santa Fe Trail to Santa Fe; reduced slightly at right, couple stamp flaws, Very Fine and rare Prussia use to New Mexico Territory.

The Prussian rate was 6½ silbergroschen (16.6¢). Weiter Franco (futher franking) of 4½ sgr. (10.8¢) for 7¢ transatlantic packet plus 3¢ U.S. inland postage. Prussia retained 2 sbr. for Prussian inland postage.
