The rail way has not altogether gone to sleep. I have had out a steam boat the past week and have more work engaged…The Textor has gone on her trip to New Orleans…",, Fine to Very Fine trio, see them all online.

image "Choctaw Agency 17 Mar. 1860" (Indian Territory), manuscript cancel at top left on buff colored cover franked by US No. 26 with piece out at top tied by one of several short diagonal pen cancels and addressed to Col. P.P. (Peter Perkins) Pitchlynn in Washington DC (Pitchlynn was the Chief of the Choctaw Indian Territory Nation, Speaker of the National Council of the Choctaw Nation and Choctaw delegate to the US government (you can read about him on his wikipedia page), opened roughly at top, still Very Fine and according to John Birkinbine, this is one of only 3 or 4 Indian Territory covers carried by Butterfield in private hands. Birkinbine believed that this cover was carried to Fort Smith Arkansas where transferred to Butterfield Overland Mail sent either to Tipton MO or by the scarce southern route to Memphis via Little Rock, then from Tipton or Memphis by train to Washington DC." John also noted that "the 3c overland rate east is equally rare." Very much worthy of further research., ex Birkinbine. (Image)

The Perpetual Emigrating Fund was established by Brigham Young in 1849 to help poor and impoverished "Saints"—members of his Church of Latter Day Saints—around the world come to Utah.
