"Choctaw Agency 17 Mar. 1860" (Indian Territory), manuscript cancel at top left on buff colored cover franked by US No. 26 with piece out at top tied by one of several short diagonal pen cancels and addressed to Col. P.P. (Peter Perkins) Pitchlynn in Washington DC (Pitchlynn was the Chief of the Choctaw Indian Territory Nation, Speaker of the National Council of the Choctaw Nation and Choctaw delegate to the US government (you can read about him on his wikipedia page), opened roughly at top, still Very Fine and according to John Birkinbine, this is one of only 3 or 4 Indian Territory covers carried by Butterfield in private hands. Birkinbine believed that this cover was carried to Fort Smith Arkansas where transferred to Butterfield Overland Mail sent either to Tipton MO or by the scarce southern route to Memphis via Little Rock, then from Tipton or Memphis by train to Washington DC." John also noted that "the 3c overland rate east is equally rare." Very much worthy of further research., ex Birkinbine. (Image)
