(1808-1855, New York Supreme Court Justice, Postmaster, and Mayor), one page signed 1853 letter written in his hand while serving as a New York Supreme Court Justice; the letter is to "Philip Phelps Esq., Deputy Comptroller" and reads, "Dear Sir, Have the legislation passed a law yet by which I can get my (money)? I have not received our cut for my services for January 1st last. Send me a check payable at any of the Banks in this City. Please answer. Robert H. Morris, Supreme Court Chambers, Jan. 8th 1853"; Morris (1808-1855) had previously served as Mayor (1841-1843) and Postmaster (1845-1849) of New York City; the scarce "RHM" signatures on the 5c New York Postmaster's Provisional (Scott 9X1d) are by Morris, Very Fine, authenticated on the reverse by renowned autograph expert Charles Hamilton (Image)
