1792-1871 the John Lievsay collection of Postal History of Italy, 175+ FLs from the French Revolution to the Unified Kingdom, showing Postal and Franchise markings through the 80 turbulent years leading to the Unification of Italy. There were more than 150 (!) local and regional changes of government; 110 are included here, franchise mail often proving the change and the continuity of mail service. The involvement of France is shown throughout, with provinces of Savoy and Nice, French expansion of post offices in the Northern Departments Conquis (88-144); two expeditions to protect the Pope; and military Campaigns against Austria. Much of the material can be dated only by the internal content. The collection starts with Armies of the 1st French Republic across the border ("Armee D'Italie", Nice and "L'Armee des Alpes", 1796 FL addressed to General Berthier, chief of staff). Annexed territory is organized into Departments by the French and assigned a number - "the Department Conquis". Included are FLs "85 Nice", "85 Monaco". French Occupy Duchy of Modena, establish Cisalpine Confederation, Lombardy occupied and Venetia invaded, good showing of 1798 Revolutionary Roman Republic, Pope driven out and Papal Rule restored (1800-1809), Austrian markings (Romagna, Lucca and Modena), "Bleeding Heart" postmarks of Florence, French Offices in Northern Italy, Kingdom of Two Sicilies, 1802 Republic Post Office in Rome, Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy markings, Principality of Lucca and Palomino, Tuscany ceded by Spanish back to France, various departmental Franchise markings, Papal markings, Austrian occupation of Savoy and Lucca, Restoration Italy, Genoa added to Sardinia, additional markings "Monaco", "Menton", provisional government established in Romagna, Austrian Intervention, various Duchies, First War of Independence. Few pieces outside the French area bear rate markings, but this not a rate study. In addition, there is only a representative showing of the "Risorgimento", with the issues of Provisional Government and expanded use of Sardinian stamps 1851-1871, as well as 1855 FL showing "Posta Mil. Sardinia" (coordinating post office in Constantinople, this is the scarcest Sardinian marking during the Crimean War), also 1859 special red "Bureau Special de L'emperor" on cover to Versailles, plus many others.
