Castleman commanded Company "D" of the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. His wartime escapades included attempting to free POWs from Camp Douglas near Chicago and burning U.S. supply boats at St. Louis. He was captured in October of 1864 and sentenced to death for spying. President Lincoln suspended the execution.
