image Two Interesting Riel Resistance / Henry Hechler Post Cards, the first card (P5c) was mailed by Captain Henry Hechler from Winnipeg to his wife (?) in Halifax, upon his arrival there on APR.24.1885. The card is overprinted with the three elements forming Webb Type A1a, and the message on back reads "Dear C..., I mail you to day 2 letters and I hope you have received my letter which I mailed the day I arrived here, all is well and hope the same from you dear ___ will write very soon ___ yours, Henry". Very fine and a wonderful example of the Hechler "Service" overprinted stationery, written in his own hand on his way to battle. The second card (P5d) is one mailed to Germany at the 1c rate (printed matter), from Halifax on JUN.18.1885. Because Hechler was serving in the Riel Resistance, the "Philatelic Courrier" office had to print post cards to explain his absence to people writing to him there. The printed message reads "Dear Sir, Your favour of the ___ has been received. Captain Hechler having gone to the front with the Company under his command to assist in quelling the rebellion of the Indians in the North-West-Territory - some 3,000 miles from here - I am unable just now to reply to yours in full. I have, however, referred it to him and on receiving his instructions will at once communicate with you. Meanwhile I rely on your consideration. On his behalf I desire to express the hope that, though your correspondence may be for a short time suspended, your relations may ever continue to be as pleasant as they have hereto been. If you desire to write directly to Mr Hechler during his absence, please address CAPT. H. HECHLER / 63rd RIFLES, HALIFAX BATALLION / Via HALIFAX, N.S., CANADA / if so addressed the postal authorities here will forward whatever you may send to any place that his Battalion may be without any extra charge. Awaiting your further favors, I have the honour to be, Very truly yours, James R. Johnson, Private Secretary".
