It is a characteristic shared with various other Continental printings, including the 1875 Issue, but notably absent in the National and American printings. Seasoned and well-informed philatelists will readily recognize and value the rarity of this stamp's paper type and its exceptional condition.

A RARE ORIGINAL GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1875 5¢ CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE WITH GRILL.
It is thought that the Continental grills were produced as an experiment in 1876, following a stamp-cleaning court trial that reignited concerns about stamp re-use. The rare J Grills are mainly from the Worthington collection, which was sold in 1917. It is widely believed that the majority, if not all, of the examples in the possession of collectors originated from the archives of Charles F. Steel, who held the patent for the grilling machines utilized from 1867 to 1873.
