FINE APPEARANCE. A CHOICE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF THE ALEXANDER'S MATCHES ONE-CENT BLUE ON SILK PAPER. ONLY 13 ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST AND MOST ARE DEFECTIVE. THIS IS POSSIBLY THE FINEST EXAMPLE EXTANT.
The Aldrich census records only 13 examples of this Match stamp rarity. All but one have faults and many are defective and repaired. This is only the second example we have offered since keeping computerized records. The ex Tolman copy, which was thinned and lightly toned, realized $5,000 hammer in our Sale 926. (Image)

This issue is frequently counterfeited, as the supply of regularly perforated 1c watermarked stamps is plentiful. There are nine examples recorded in the Aldrich census, but at least one of those has received a negative certificate from the Philatelic Foundation.
