2246 E image2000 Summer Olympics Gold Medallists 45c perforated essays 'MATT WELSH/Swimming 200m backstroke', 'HAYLEY LEWIS/Swimming 800m freestyle' and 'CAROLINE HILDRETH/Swimming 200m breasttroke' (error for 'breaststroke') ACSC 2348E(3) (4) & (5), unmounted. Unissued. These were trial printings to test the digital printing technology. They were produced as pairs of sheetlets of 10, of which only one pair of each came onto the market in London a few years ago. Thus only 20 examples of each stamp can exist, making them far scarcer than the 1935 Unissued Perf 14 1/- ANZAC, Cat $2750 (£1600). Welsh finished 3rd in his event; Hildreth failed to reach the final; and Lewis didn't even compete in the 2000 Games. The spelling error on the Hildreth stamp has apparently not been recorded elsewhere. A must-have for every Olympics collection. (3)
