659 c imagePrince Alfred Mine: framed 23mm 'PRINCE ALFRED MINE/SA' (rated RRRRR) faint but discernible strike on double-rate cover to Adelaide with De La Rue Perf 10 2d x2 & two large-part strikes of '199' (RR), 'KANYAKA/FE3' & framed 'PO RAILWAY/FE5' transit backstamps, light horizontal fold across the lower stamp. Illustrated in the Handbook. The numeral was also used at Dashwoods Gully 1863-67 and 1871. This may be the only confirmed usage at Prince Alfred Mine, where it should be rated RRRRR. (NB: the illustration of '199' is the same as under Dashwoods Gully.) PO 13.7.1872; closed 1.4.1876. Remote copper mine, 40km SE of Hawker. Ex Don Pearce. Don's piece with the only other recorded example sold for $885.
